Time to leave the Nest
The process of leaving the "nest egg" tends to be easier when couples are still together. For widows or widowers, this process is much more stressful as the "emotional" connection to all the life experiences enjoyed in the home keeps one attached, especially to the memories of a deceased spouse.
This later in life transition requires not only a helping hand, but a helping heart.
Marc's best tips...
The decision to leave the nest egg usually falls into two categories: 1- To enjoy a well deserved retirement in a simpler lifestyle such as moving to a smaller house or condo thus avoiding high maintenance of a large property, or 2- The necessity to move into a more manageable property, like a bungalow or condo, mainly for health reasons.
Although both reasons are valid, the later is often perceived as a "forced exit".
Preparation is therefore key and that includes mental and emotional preparedness. As a realtor, the servicing of such clientèle must be provided with a large amount of compassion, understanding and reassurance that tenured realtors have acquired throughout the years. A young realtor will have difficulty relating to the client just by virtue of the age difference. My position is more of a hands-on approach where a good and honest discussion leads the way to facilitating the entire process.
